A High Street worth exploring on foot

Newmarket may be best known for racing, but the High Street is also somewhere to come for clothes, gifts and everyday shopping. Start with the businesses along the main street, then leave time to explore The Guineas and the market area rather than making a single-shop stop.

Love Newmarket, the town's business improvement district, maintains a local business directory. It is useful for finding a particular retailer or discovering a shop you have not tried, especially when you want to buy locally rather than head straight out of town.

Golding: an established High Street name

Golding of Newmarket at 67 High Street sells menswear and womenswear, with footwear, gifts and accessories alongside its clothing ranges. Its history goes back to 1856, and made-to-measure tailoring remains part of the offer.

It is the sort of shop where a planned visit can be more useful than browsing online alone, particularly if fit or a specific occasion matters. Ask about the service you need before travelling for an appointment or a particular item.

The Guineas for shopping and daily essentials

The Guineas brings together shops, services and food stops in the centre of Newmarket. Add it to a High Street wander if you have everyday purchases to make, or use its shop information to plan a more focused visit.

It also provides a useful point of reference for the market: the regular outdoor stalls are in Market Square car park to the rear of the shopping centre. Looking at the two together makes it easier to plan a sensible shopping circuit.

Visit the market on Tuesday or Saturday

Newmarket's regular market runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays in Market Square car park. Stalls include produce, eggs, fish, cakes and jewellery, with a mix that can change between visits. Bring a bag and leave time to see what is available before finishing your other errands.

Makers markets add another reason to visit, with independent makers, bakers and creators. These are separate dated events, so use West Suffolk Markets for the current programme rather than assuming every Saturday has the same stalls.

Food stops and getting into town

A cafe or lunch stop is an easy way to turn shopping into a longer visit. Our food and drink listings cover local places to eat, while the other Newmarket guides offer ideas if you want to add a museum visit or explore more of the town.

The market operator places the railway station about a 15-minute walk from Market Square, with buses stopping outside The Guineas. Drivers can compare current town-centre car parks on the council website; follow the signs and payment instructions at the car park you choose.
